Dubai, UAE: A recent study highlighted that in 2023, Dubai motorists spent 33 hours in traffic congestion, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to alleviate commuting stress and costs. The planned expansion of the Dubai Metro aims not only to address these issues but also to enhance livability under the city's ambitious '20-minute city' plan.
The Executive Council of Dubai has unveiled plans to expand the current Dubai Metro network from 64 stations covering 84km to 96 stations spanning 140km by 2030. Further expansion to 140 stations and 228km is projected by 2040. This initiative seeks to foster mixed-use neighborhoods around metro stations, integrating residential, commercial, office, and service spaces to reduce dependency on cars and promote sustainable urban growth.
Dr. Monica Menendez from New York University Abu Dhabi emphasized the importance of diversified transport options and urban planning in achieving the '20-minute city' concept. She stressed the need for integrated policies that enhance public transportation like buses and promote active modes such as walking and biking. These initiatives are crucial in reducing congestion and promoting efficient, eco-friendly commuting options.

Emirati traffic safety researcher Dr. Mostafa Al Dah highlighted the impact of long commutes on traffic congestion and carbon emissions. He advocated for creating '20-minute cities' where essential services are easily accessible, reducing travel demands and promoting environmental sustainability.
Andrew Elliott, director at Chestertons Dubai, noted the economic benefits of improved transport links, attracting investments and stimulating urban redevelopment. Properties near metro stations are expected to gain popularity among environment-conscious investors and residents, aligning with Dubai's sustainability goals.
While these transformations require time and concerted effort, experts like Prof. Menendez are optimistic about Dubai's ability to achieve its urban vision. She underscored the UAE's potential to implement innovative concepts and enhance quality of life through accessible, well-connected neighborhoods.
The vision for Dubai includes multiple '20-minute neighborhoods,' where residents can access essential amenities within short distances, reducing reliance on cars and enhancing community well-being.
