Abu Dhabi has introduced a comprehensive overhaul of its public transport fare system, aiming to streamline and integrate city and suburban transport services under the umbrella of the 'Standard Service'. This new system, set to take effect on February 28, marks a significant shift in the way commuters navigate the capital's transit network. Under the revamped fare structure, passengers will pay a boarding fee of Dh2, along with an additional 5 fils for every kilometer traveled, with a maximum cap of Dh5 per journey. This initiative, spearheaded by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), seeks to simplify fare calculations while extending the reach of public transportation across a broader geographic area. The Standard Service fare is designed to provide a more user-friendly experience for residents and visitors alike, promoting greater accessibility and convenience within Abu Dhabi's transport network.
Crucially, the new fare system allows for seamless transfers between different modes of public transport without incurring additional boarding fees. Passengers can switch between services within a 60-minute window from their last tap-out, facilitating smoother transitions across the city's bus network. However, certain conditions apply, such as restrictions on transferring in the opposite direction of the journey and a limit of two transfers using up to three buses. These transfer conditions also extend to the Abu Dhabi Link service, ensuring continuity and coherence in the overall transport experience.
To calculate the cost of a journey involving bus transfers, fares are determined based on the distance traveled between the point of boarding and alighting. It is mandatory for passengers to tap their 'Hafilat' card on the reader when boarding and alighting from each bus to ensure that the journey is considered a single trip. Failure to do so may result in penalties, including the deduction of the entire bus route cost upon the next card usage. This precautionary measure aims to deter fare evasion and ensure fair payment for the services rendered.
In addition to the fare restructuring, Abu Dhabi has expanded the coverage of public transport passes to encompass a wider geographic area, including city and suburb zones in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra (excluding intercity services). These passes, available for purchase as of February 28, offer commuters greater flexibility and affordability in accessing the Standard Service. The 7-day pass is priced at Dh35, while the 30-day pass costs Dh95, providing commuters with cost-effective options for regular travel within the emirate.
For Emirati families facing financial constraints, subsidised public transport passes are available through social support programmes. Eligible families can purchase the 7-day pass for Dh30 and the 30-day pass for Dh80, making public transportation more accessible to those in need. Furthermore, existing annual passes for seniors, people of determination, and students remain unchanged, continuing to provide coverage for the Standard Service across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra.
It's important to note that passes issued prior to February 28 will remain valid until their expiration date, albeit with limitations on coverage. These passes will only be active within the city limits of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra, excluding suburban areas covered under the Standard Service. Additionally, children aged 10 and below continue to enjoy free transportation, further incentivising families to utilize public transport for their commuting needs.
In essence, Abu Dhabi's revamped public transport fare system represents a concerted effort to enhance the efficiency, accessibility, and affordability of transportation services across the emirate. By integrating city and suburban networks under a unified fare structure, the initiative aims to improve the overall transit experience for residents and visitors while promoting sustainable mobility solutions for the future.
