Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has decided to participate in U.S. President Donald Trump’s recently established Board of Peace for Gaza, marking a notable turn in his publicly expressed position. This development follows previous critiques from Netanyahu’s team regarding the board’s composition, particularly the committee dedicated to Gaza.
Initially introduced as a compact assembly of global leaders to oversee a ceasefire initiative for Gaza, the Board of Peace has since expanded its ambitions. President Trump has extended invitations to numerous nations and suggested the board’s potential role in addressing conflicts beyond Gaza. This wider aspiration has piqued interest while also raising apprehensions among some world leaders.
Earlier, Netanyahu’s representatives voiced concerns about the Gaza executive committee's inclusion of Turkey, which Israel considers a key regional adversary. They contended that the committee had been set up without adequate coordination and did not align with Israel’s strategic objectives. Nonetheless, Netanyahu's willingness to join signifies a strategic decision to engage rather than remain disengaged.
This choice could introduce friction within Israel’s own governing coalition. Several of Netanyahu’s far-right allies, notably Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have criticized the board heavily. They assert that Gaza’s future should be exclusively managed by Israel without reliance on international entities, putting Netanyahu's political unity to the test.
Countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Vietnam, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, and Argentina have already agreed to be part of the board. Meanwhile, other nations including the UK, Canada, Egypt, Russia, Turkey, and the EU have received invitations but are yet to confirm their participation.
The announcement coincided with President Trump’s attendance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he is anticipated to elaborate on the operational framework of the board. Many uncertainties linger, particularly regarding the scope of authority the board will wield and which leaders will participate.
Trump has also ignited conversations by proposing that the board could potentially take over certain roles from the United Nations. While he has critiqued the U.N. for falling short of its responsibilities, he also acknowledges its necessity. This dual stance has alarmed various nations; for example, France has expressed support for Trump’s peace initiative but opposes the idea of creating a substitute structure to the U.N.
Under the ceasefire framework for Gaza, the board’s executive committee would manage the complex second phase of the agreement. This involves deploying an international security apparatus, disarming Hamas, reconstructing Gaza, and supervising a collective of Palestinian experts tasked with managing daily operations in the region.
The White House indicates that the board comprises a diverse mix of individuals, including senior U.S. representatives, international diplomats, and business leaders. An additional executive group will approach broader decision-making, while a designated representative will manage day-to-day operations in Gaza.
Netanyahu's choice to align with the board highlights the challenging dilemmas confronting Israel as it seeks a balance between security, global expectations, and regional dynamics. The capacity of this new board to effectively foster peace in Gaza remains to be seen, but its formation has already altered the global dialogue.
