NCM Expert Forecasts Weekend Weather Rain Outlook for Friday

Dubai: After heavy rainfall surprised residents across the UAE on Thursday, May 2, questions arose about the weather forecast for the upcoming weekend. Gulf News reached out to Dr. Habib Ahmed, a senior meteorologist at the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), to shed light on the weather outlook.

Dr. Habib provided insights into the expected weather conditions for the coastal areas of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman from Friday to Sunday. He stated that these regions are unlikely to experience rainfall, with skies forecasted to range from partly cloudy to clear. However, internal areas of the country, along with southern and eastern regions including Al Dhafrah, Al Ain, Fujairah, and their surroundings, may witness overcast skies with a possibility of light to moderate rainfall.

The abrupt weather change on Thursday, marked by heavy rain and thunderstorms, caught many by surprise. In Dubai, residents were awoken by strong winds, thunder, and lightning as early as 3 am, deviating from the expected weather forecast.

The Met Office attributed this unexpected weather phenomenon to the extension of surface low pressure from the Red Sea, combined with humid south-easterly winds. These atmospheric conditions led to the migration of rain clouds from Saudi Arabia towards the UAE.

Although the intensity of rainfall lessened around 4:30 am, weather patterns intensified once again around 8 am, resulting in heavy downpours across the entire country until approximately 10 am.

By 4 pm on Thursday, a significant shift occurred as the sun emerged and clouds dispersed from the coastal cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, moving towards Oman. The NCM subsequently downgraded the amber alert to yellow, indicating a decrease in weather severity.
