NASA Reveals UAE Flood Devastation, Heavy Rains Disrupt Daily Life Last week's deluge in Dubai disrupted normal life, prompting a mass shift to remote work among the city's private sector entities. The American space agency NASA has now unveiled images showcasing the extent of the flooding across the UAE following the torrential rain.
According to NASA, the unprecedented rainfall was attributed to a "slow-moving storm" system, which inundated the Gulf states, depositing more precipitation than the region typically receives in a year. The UAE's meteorological department reported a staggering 6.04 billion cubic meters of rain, nearing the annual average of 6.7 billion cubic meters.

"Areas remained flooded on April 19, when Landsat 9 satellite passed over the region for the first time since the storms. The image showed flooding in Jebel Ali," stated NASA.
The Landsat 9 satellite, instrumental in monitoring and managing land resources vital for human sustenance, captured the aftermath of the deluge, revealing the widespread inundation.
NASA also shared a composite image, contrasting the UAE's landscape on April 3 with that of April 19. The initial depiction showcases the arid plains synonymous with the region, while the latter exhibits extensive water puddles, indicative of the flooding's impact.
Khaleej Times elaborated on the NASA imagery, highlighting Sheikh Zayed Road submerged under water, a crucial artery traversing Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Additionally, flooded patches were discernible in residential areas like Khalifa City and Zayed City, situated southeast of Abu Dhabi's downtown.
The failure of water drainage impeded recovery efforts, with persistent flooding obstructing roads in Dubai for several days. Authorities resorted to pumping trucks equipped with large hoses to extract excess water and facilitate clearance operations.
Attributed to climate change, the heavy rainfall underscores the urgent need for climate resilience strategies to mitigate future disasters. As the UAE grapples with the aftermath of the deluge, efforts to bolster infrastructure and enhance disaster preparedness remain imperative in safeguarding the nation against similar catastrophes in the future.
