NASA will host a live news conference today from the Johnson Space Center in Houston to provide an update on the status of Boeing’s first crewed Starliner test flight, which has been in space for the past two months. Originally planned as an eight-day mission, the journey has now extended to 80 days.
The press conference, scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT) on Saturday, August 24, will feature NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and other agency representatives. The event will be available for live viewing on the NASA app and its YouTube channel at 10:30 p.m. IST.
Astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore were launched on June 5 for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS). However, their return has been delayed indefinitely due to issues with the spacecraft, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions. To address these technical problems, NASA and Boeing have been gathering data on the spacecraft’s helium and propulsion systems from both in-space and ground-based observations.

The news conference will cover the current status of the mission, outline the steps being taken to resolve the technical issues, and detail the planned procedures for the spacecraft’s undocking and return to Earth. This update will include a review of the mission's technical data and certification of the flight rationale for the planned return.
In the meantime, Williams and Wilmore have been integrated with the ISS crew, performing their routine tasks aboard the station.
NASA’s Crew Program includes both Boeing’s Starliner and SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsules for transporting astronauts to and from the ISS. The current mission with Boeing’s Starliner is the first of at least six crewed flights under a multibillion-dollar contract with NASA. SpaceX has already completed nine crewed missions for NASA since 2020, in addition to several private missions.
