NASA has announced that the undocking of the uncrewed Boeing Starliner capsule will not occur before September 6, following a comprehensive review. The decision comes after the capsule encountered a series of technical issues, particularly with its propulsion system, within the first 24 hours of its flight to the International Space Station (ISS). These issues were deemed too hazardous for a crewed return.
The review also revealed that the two astronauts who flew to the ISS aboard the Starliner in June will be brought back to Earth early next year using a SpaceX vehicle, as opposed to the Starliner. This decision underscores the severity of the propulsion system problems experienced during the mission.

Once undocked, the Starliner is anticipated to take about six hours to return to Earth, with its landing planned for White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico. During this time, ground teams will oversee the spacecraft's trajectory remotely, ensuring it undergoes all necessary maneuvers for a safe undocking, re-entry, and parachute-assisted landing in the southwestern United States.
The Starliner has previously demonstrated its capability for safe uncrewed entry and landing through two successful orbital flight tests, as noted by NASA.
