N. Korea Plans to Demolish Unused Northern Road Sections, Says Seoul

South Korea reported on Monday that it has observed signs indicating North Korea's intent to demolish sections of inter-Korean roads that are no longer in use. This development comes amid escalating tensions between the two countries, sparked by North Korea's accusations that South Korea flew drones over its territory.

The planned destruction of these roads aligns with leader Kim Jong Un's ongoing efforts to sever ties with South Korea and solidify its status as North Korea's principal adversary. In a briefing, South Korean military spokesperson Lee Sung Joon stated that the military is monitoring various activities in North Korea, including the installation of screens along the roads, suggesting preparations for demolition. He noted that the demolitions could occur as soon as Monday.

Lee also raised concerns that North Korea might attempt to launch a space rocket, which the United Nations considers a prohibited test of long-range missile technology. Furthermore, he indicated that North Korea may engage in smaller provocations to increase pressure on Seoul.

Details on the extent of the road destruction remain unclear, but the situation follows North Korea's recent accusations that South Korea had launched drones to drop propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang three times this month. In response, North Korea has threatened to retaliate with force if such actions persist.

On Sunday, North Korea's Defense Ministry announced that it had issued a preliminary operation order to artillery and military units near the border with South Korea, preparing them to open fire. The ministry warned that the entire territory of South Korea could be reduced to ashes if the North decides to act.

North Korea's tendency to release aggressive rhetoric often intensifies during periods of heightened animosity with its rivals. However, experts believe that a full-scale, preemptive attack is unlikely given that North Korea's military is significantly outmatched by the combined forces of the United States and South Korea.

While South Korea has refrained from confirming whether it deployed drones, it has asserted that it would respond sternly to any threats against its citizens.

Last week, North Korea declared its intention to permanently close its border with South Korea and construct new front-line defense structures to counter perceived aggression from South Korean and U.S. forces. South Korean officials noted that North Korea has been reinforcing its border defenses since earlier this year, which includes adding anti-tank barriers and planting mines to bolster its security posture and discourage defections.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are currently at a peak, exacerbated by North Korea's series of provocative weapons tests and the increased military exercises conducted by South Korea and the U.S. The destruction of the roads and potential additional provocations could be perceived as a strategy to heighten pressure on South Korea and the U.S. ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

In a significant shift, Kim Jong Un previously ordered revisions to North Korea's constitution to eliminate the goal of peaceful unification with South Korea. He has also designated South Korea as the country's invariable principal enemy and sought to define North Korea's sovereign territory more distinctly. This move surprised many observers, as it marks a departure from the aspirations of Kim's predecessors for peaceful unification on North Korea's terms. Analysts suggest that Kim aims to reduce South Korea's influence in the regional nuclear standoff while seeking direct negotiations with the U.S., simultaneously hoping to minimize South Korean cultural influence and strengthen his domestic rule.
