DP World Welcomes World’s Largest Green Car Carrier

DP World has received the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly car carrier, the MV Höegh Sunrise, at Jebel Ali Port for the first time.

The Aurora-class vessel, owned by Höegh Autoliners, is the first in the automotive shipping sector with a zero-carbon ready design, capable of running on future fuels such as ammonia and methanol. It sets a new benchmark for sustainable deep-sea transport.

With a capacity of 9,100 cars, the ship reduces carbon emissions per vehicle by 58% compared to the industry standard. The vessel arrived from Europe on its maiden call, carrying 1,200 vehicles.

A plaque ceremony was held at Jebel Ali Port to mark the milestone, attended by Ahmed Badri, Vice President General Cargo & RoRo at DP World GCC, and Atanu Maiti, Regional Head of Commercial Operations at Höegh Autoliners for the Middle East, Africa, India, and Europe.

Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, said:

DP World handled a record 1.3 million vehicles in Dubai in 2024, a 53.6% increase from the previous year, highlighting the emirate’s growing role in global automotive trade. In August 2025, DP World expanded its automotive logistics capacity with a new 2.6 million sq ft vehicle storage yard at Terminal 4. It is also developing the world’s largest auto market, spanning 20 million sq ft.
