The Museum of the Future, in partnership with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has launched a new prototype of an aerial taxi developed by Joby Aviation. The prototype is showcased on the Tomorrow, Today floor of the museum, as Dubai aspires to lead the world in smart and sustainable transportation. This initiative is part of Dubai's efforts to shape the future of travel, with a focus on cutting-edge technology and the environment.
The aerial taxi project is the main component of Dubai's program to change how people travel in the city, aiming to ensure that 25% of the trips in the city are taken by self-driving vehicles by 2030. The taxi operates on electricity and will help minimize carbon emissions into the atmosphere to support global efforts towards sustainability. This project forms part of a broader Dubai Self-Driving Strategy that seeks to enhance the means of transportation within the city.
The Director of Transportation Systems at RTA's Public Transport Agency, Khaled Al Awadhi, said that he was excited to present the aerial taxi model at the Museum of the Future. He said that it reflects the forward-thinking approach of Dubai to transportation. He further mentioned that Dubai will be the first city globally to launch this aerial taxi service, which is set to commence in the first quarter of 2026. The aerial taxi has vertical take-off and landing capabilities, differentiating it from other means of transport. The taxi also complies with very high standards of safety and security for passengers.

Majed Al Mansoori, the executive director of the Museum of the Future, also shared his thoughts regarding this exhibit. According to him, the Museum of the Future takes pride in displaying this aerial taxi prototype due to the fact that this reflects what Dubai does for shaping the future of transportation. This then provides a glimpse into the visitor about innovations that will eventually make travel faster, safer, and more sustainable.
The Joby S4 aerial taxi uses electric aviation technology, making it an eco-friendly and sustainable vehicle. It produces zero harmful emissions because it runs on electricity. The design consists of six rotors, four battery packs, and space for four passengers and a pilot. The taxi can travel up to 161 kilometers and reach a top speed of 322 km/h, much quieter than a traditional helicopter.
During its inception, this aerial taxi will link Dubai to major destinations in the emirate, such as Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. This would mean, for instance, that the drive from the airport to Palm Jumeirah, which could take up to 45 minutes, would now take just 12 minutes on the aerial taxi. This will enhance the public transport system in the city and make it easier to move around, with options like e-scooters and bicycles also part of the transportation mix.
A vertiport (a special landing station for aerial taxis) will be built to accommodate the new service. This vertiport will handle up to 42,000 landings per year and serve around 170,000 passengers. It will be equipped with the latest facilities to ensure passenger safety. Joby Aviation will manage the operations of the aerial taxi, while Skyports Infrastructure will design, build, and manage the station. The RTA will make sure that the service works smoothly and is connected with the rest of Dubai’s transport system.
Joby's UAE General Manager, Anthony Khoury, says that the thrill of bringing this electric air taxi to the public is shared with the community through the exhibit in the museum. He further says that they would love to bring an extraordinary experience to the people of Dubai and start a conversation about what clean, quiet, and efficient air travel in the future would be.
The new aerial taxi forms a very integral part of Dubai's Self-Driving Strategy. It complements the other modes of transport within the city, such as the metro, buses, and normal taxis. It is an exciting development after the RTA had signed agreements with Skyports Infrastructure and Joby Aviation to make this futuristic mode of transport a reality in Dubai. The aerial taxis will be the first urban air transport network with vertical take-off and landing in the world that might be deployed in any city.
