Mumbai: India's pioneering undersea tunnel, part of the coastal road project in Mumbai, has encountered signs of seepage, stirring concerns just months after its inauguration. The twin tunnels, boasting a diameter of 12.19 meters each, delve 17 to 20 meters beneath the sea level. While one side of the tunnel is operational, the issue of seepage emerged recently, sparking safety apprehensions with the impending monsoon season.
Opened to traffic on March 11, the coastal road tunnel has seen over 700,000 vehicles traverse through it within a short span. However, on a recent Sunday morning, seepage was observed, prompting widespread circulation of videos on social media platforms.

The cause of the leakage remains unclear, undergoing thorough investigation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, after inspecting the site, assured that the situation was being addressed diligently. He emphasized that while there were instances of leakage at certain points, there was no compromise to the tunnel's structural integrity. Specific technologies will be deployed for mitigation, ensuring a permanent solution before the onset of the rainy season, Shinde asserted.
This incident follows a previous episode on April 10, when water ingress occurred in the pedestrian underpass of Haji Ali Coastal Road, drawing sharp criticism towards the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). However, the coastal road, conceived as part of Mumbai's urban blueprint since 1967, was inaugurated amidst much anticipation by Chief Minister Shinde, alongside Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The second phase of the coastal road is scheduled to be operational by June 10, according to Shinde's announcement.
The 2.07 km undersea tunnel, stretching from Girgaon to Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy, is a pivotal component of the coastal road project, substantially reducing travel time from Girgaon to Worli. Despite encountering initial challenges, including the recent seepage issue, the coastal road project aims to enhance connectivity and ease traffic congestion in Mumbai, resembling the iconic Marine Drive promenade in its design and functionality.
