In a tragic turn of events, Mumbai witnessed a devastating billboard collapse at a petrol pump in Ghatkopar, claiming the lives of sixteen individuals and leaving 41 others critically injured. The incident occurred amidst a dust storm, as captured in a recently surfaced video depicting the harrowing moment when the massive 120 ft x 120 ft hoarding descended onto the fuel station's roof, trapping over a hundred people.
Rescue efforts, involving disaster response forces, were underway for three days before being called off today. The emergence of a new video, recorded from a passing car, offers a chilling glimpse into the chaotic scene as vehicles navigate through the storm. The footage captures the relentless rain and swirling water on the road, before abruptly shifting focus to the left window, where unsuspecting motorists and bystanders can be seen at the fuel pump moments before the billboard's catastrophic collapse.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage over civic negligence, particularly concerning the proximity of such a colossal billboard to the coastline. Authorities have taken swift action, filing a case of culpable homicide against Bhavesh Bhinde, the owner of the advertising agency responsible for erecting the billboard. Bhinde, who faces numerous prior charges, including rape allegations, is currently evading law enforcement.
In response to the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased, along with the state government's commitment to covering the medical expenses of the injured. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has reiterated its stance, stating that it had not granted permission for the hoarding and had been addressing the issue with the relevant parties for the past two years. Subsequent to the incident, several other large billboards across the city have been dismantled as a precautionary measure.
