The live-action prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, directed by Barry Jenkins, is making a strong impact in Indian theatres. With Shah Rukh Khan lending his voice in the Hindi version and Mahesh Babu in the Telugu version, the film has captured the hearts of Indian audiences. While the movie has not matched global industry expectations, it has performed well in India, collecting ₹38 crore within just four days of release.

On its fifth day, Tuesday, Mufasa is expected to add another ₹5 crore to its collections. Thanks to the Christmas holiday, Wednesday is expected to receive a massive boost. By the end of its first week, the movie is likely to earn ₹57-58 crore in India. With the New Year weekend approaching, Mufasa is poised to maintain its momentum and possibly enter the ₹100 crore club in India. This would make it a certified hit in the Indian market.
Strong Ticket Sales for Christmas Day
The movie has already sold 50,000 tickets across top multiplex chains for Christmas Day, even before the holiday begins. By 2 PM IST on Christmas Eve, Mufasa had sold 41,500 tickets at PVRInox and 8,500 tickets at Cinepolis. This makes it the most preferred movie at national multiplexes for the festive season, even though it faces stiff competition from regional blockbusters like Pushpa 2 and Baby John.
On Christmas Day itself, Mufasa: The Lion King is expected to collect over ₹10 crore, further solidifying its position as a holiday favorite. The prequel is on track to end its first week with impressive numbers, setting itself up for a successful second weekend and the New Year holiday rush.
Comparisons with the 2019 Version
The 2019 live-action version of The Lion King was a massive hit in India, earning over ₹150 crore. While it may be challenging for Mufasa to achieve the same numbers, its performance is commendable, especially given the global underperformance of prequels.
Prequels Struggle Globally, but India Shows Support
Globally, prequels have struggled to match the success of their predecessors. Movies like Furiosa have only managed to earn a fraction of what their earlier counterparts did. Similarly, Mufasa is expected to earn less than half of the 2019 The Lion King's global earnings. However, thanks to the involvement of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and South Indian icon Mahesh Babu, the movie has found significant success in India compared to other markets.
A Promising Journey Ahead
With its strong start, Mufasa: The Lion King is set to become a holiday favourite for Indian audiences. The film’s engaging storyline, combined with the iconic voices of Shah Rukh Khan and Mahesh Babu, has made it a must-watch. As the New Year approaches, the movie’s box office journey looks promising.
