Indonesia's Mount Ibu, situated in the eastern part of the archipelago, unleashed a significant eruption on Monday, propelling a massive ash column soaring over five kilometers (three miles) into the sky. This eruption comes after authorities escalated the volcano's alert level to the second-highest category just a week prior. Despite the dramatic display, no immediate reports of damage or casualties were received. However, striking images captured the ominous sight of ash engulfing the skies above Halmahera island in North Maluku province.
According to officials, the ash plume reached an altitude of more than five kilometers above the volcano's summit, marking one of the most substantial eruptions witnessed in recent months. Muhammad Wafid, the head of Indonesia's Geology Agency, described the ash column as thick and leaning towards the west. In response to the eruption, authorities advised residents in the vicinity to wear protective facemasks and glasses when venturing outdoors to shield against the falling volcanic ash.

This recent eruption follows a smaller-scale event on Saturday, during which Mount Ibu spewed lava, ejected ash several kilometers into the night sky, and produced lightning. Despite the heightened activity, the volcano's alert level remained unchanged at the second-highest tier on Monday, prompting authorities to enforce an exclusion zone extending between three and five kilometers around the crater.
Mount Ibu is renowned as one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, having erupted over 21,000 times in the previous year alone. Sofyan Primulyana, an official from the Geology Agency, revealed that in 2023, Mount Ibu recorded an average of 58 eruptions per day, underlining its persistent volcanic activity.
Indonesia, situated within the volatile Pacific "Ring of Fire," frequently experiences seismic and volcanic disturbances due to its geological positioning. Just last month, Mount Ruang in North Sulawesi province erupted multiple times, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents from nearby islands. Mount Ruang continues to maintain the highest alert level, necessitating the permanent relocation of all approximately 800 inhabitants of Ruang island.
