His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, recently met with the team from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) at the Union House in Dubai. This significant meeting highlighted the UAE's ongoing advancements in space science and technology.
The gathering was also attended by notable figures including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.
During the meeting, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid emphasized that under the leadership of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has positioned itself as a key player on the global stage in the realm of space exploration. This progress, he noted, is driven by a forward-looking vision that aims to enhance the UAE's status among leading nations in space science, bolstered by the growing expertise of Emirati talent.

Senior officials present at the meeting included His Excellency Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MBRSC; Amer Al Sayegh Al Ghaferi, Assistant Director General of the Aerospace Engineering Sector at MBRSC; and astronauts Nora Al Matrooshi, the first Emirati female astronaut, and Mohammad Al Mulla.
His Highness praised the dedication of the MBRSC team, recognizing their significant contributions to the UAE's burgeoning space technology sector. He stressed the importance of continuing efforts to achieve further milestones in space technology and other futuristic fields, underscoring their critical role in developing solutions that enhance the quality of life and address global challenges.
The MBRSC team provided His Highness with a detailed briefing on the MBZ-SAT, the most advanced satellite in the region and the second satellite entirely developed by an Emirati team. The briefing covered the current phase of environmental testing, essential for ensuring the satellite's durability and performance in space. The team assured that upon successful completion of these tests, the final preparations for the satellite's launch would commence. The MBZ-SAT is slated for launch no earlier than October 2024 aboard a SpaceX rocket.
Additionally, Sheikh Mohammed was updated on the latest progress within the UAE Astronaut Programme. Astronauts Nora Al Matrooshi and Mohammad Al Mulla, who completed a rigorous two-year training programme at NASA, shared insights on their preparations for upcoming space missions. His Highness encouraged them to strive for the highest standards of excellence in this crucial field.
The meeting was also attended by His Excellency Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs; His Excellency Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chief of Police and Public Security in Dubai; and other senior officials.
Expressing gratitude for the leadership's unwavering support, His Excellency Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MBRSC, highlighted the Centre's achievements. He stated, "The vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inspires us to further elevate the UAE's leadership in space exploration. We are proud to work on the most advanced satellite in the Arab world, named after the President of the UAE. Our ambitions for the future of space exploration are immense, and we are committed to continuing our journey of excellence."
The UAE Astronaut Programme, launched by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, stands as the first initiative of its kind in the Arab world. Aimed at training and preparing a cadre of Emirati astronauts for scientific research missions in space, the programme is part of the UAE National Space Programme. It seeks to cultivate a culture of scientific inquiry and inspire young Emiratis to pursue careers in science and space technology.
