The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has achieved a significant milestone by welcoming its largest and most diverse cohort of graduate students to date. The university recently held a series of on-campus orientation events to mark this occasion.
The 2024 intake includes 209 students, reflecting a record number of applications and admissions. Out of more than 4,800 applicants, MBZUAI admitted only five percent, underscoring the competitive nature of the selection process. This new cohort is notable not only for its size but also for its diversity and the introduction of new academic programs. It includes the university’s first-ever computer science (CS) and robotics students, following the establishment of two new departments and four associated graduate programs last year.
Professor Timothy Baldwin, MBZUAI’s Provost, highlighted the significance of this growth, noting, "This expansion underscores the university’s global standing as a leading institution in the AI field. Our commitment to leveraging AI to address real-world challenges and positively impact society and industry is unwavering."

The university’s reputation for diversity, inclusion, and research excellence has been a key factor in attracting international students and faculty. The Undergraduate Research Internship Program (UGRIP) has played a crucial role, with 79 international undergraduates visiting MBZUAI’s Masdar City campus in 2023 and 2024. Notably, over 50 percent of UGRIP participants from its inaugural edition have joined MBZUAI this year.
MBZUAI’s rise in global rankings is attributed to its high-impact research output. First- and second-year students, along with faculty, are making significant contributions to top AI venues worldwide. The university’s student-faculty ratio of 5:1 enhances its ability to nurture future AI specialists.
The current cohort comprises students from 36 countries, including 44 Emiratis. Of the 209 new students, 147 are pursuing master’s degrees and 62 are enrolled in Ph.D. programs, focusing on areas such as computer vision (CV), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and robotics. The total student body now includes 381 individuals, with a gender distribution of 30 percent female and 70 percent male, representing 49 countries.
In response to the growing demand for specialized knowledge, MBZUAI is expanding its academic offerings by establishing three new departments in human-computer interaction (HCI), statistics and data science, and computational biology. These additions aim to enhance the university’s interdisciplinary curriculum and research initiatives.
Since its opening in 2019, MBZUAI has quickly risen to prominence, now ranked among the top 100 computer science universities globally and within the top 20 for AI, CV, ML, NLP, and robotics, according to CSRankings. The university’s ongoing commitment to innovation supports the UAE’s broader goals of fostering talent and advancing local industries.
