Missing Woman Rescued After Six Days in Mountains with Snake Bite

A woman missing for six days in Australia’s Snowy Mountains has been found "dazed and injured" by emergency services following an extensive search and rescue operation. Lovisa Sjoberg, 48, was located on Sunday afternoon local time by a National Parks and Wildlife Service officer on the Nungar Creek Trail at Kiandra. She was suffering from a suspected snake bite, dehydration, and a rolled ankle.

Sjoberg, an avid photographer known for documenting wild horses in the remote Kosciuszko National Park, had raised concerns after a hire car company reported that she had not returned her vehicle. Her abandoned car was later discovered unlocked, prompting fears for her safety.

On October 21, New South Wales (NSW) Police issued a public appeal for help in locating her and initiated a large-scale search operation. The effort involved sniffer dogs, firefighters, park rangers, and a helicopter equipped with infrared technology. Despite the extensive search, rescue teams faced challenges in locating Sjoberg due to difficult bushland conditions and dropping nighttime temperatures, which fell to around zero degrees Celsius.

Supt. Toby Lindsay reported that Sjoberg had been "wandering [for] days" through the tough terrain. She informed rescuers that she believed she had been bitten by a copperhead snake approximately four days prior to her rescue. While copperhead snakes are generally shy and not aggressive, their venom can be a potent neurotoxin and may lead to severe consequences without medical treatment.

Emergency responders treated Sjoberg for her injuries at the scene before rushing her to the hospital, where she is currently in stable condition. Supt. Lindsay expressed relief at her survival, stating, “She’s in fact very fortunate to be alive... she obviously went through a tough time.” He added that she is now in a "reasonable condition" and is "happy to be alive."

This incident highlights the potential dangers of outdoor exploration, particularly in remote areas, and the importance of proper safety measures when venturing into wilderness environments.
