An Air India flight going from Delhi to Tel Aviv had to change its route and land in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, May 4, 2025, after a missile hit near Israel's main airport, Ben Gurion Airport. This happened just before the flight was about to land. The missile strike caused fear and panic among people at the airport.
Air India said that their flight AI139, which was flying from Delhi to Tel Aviv, was flying over Jordan when the airline decided to turn it around and land safely in Abu Dhabi because of the incident in Israel. The flight has now landed normally in Abu Dhabi, and the plane will return to Delhi soon.

After this sudden attack, Air India stopped all flights to and from Tel Aviv right away. They said their services will stay suspended until May 6, 2025, to keep their passengers and staff safe.
Not just Air India, other airlines also stopped their flights to Israel. These include Lufthansa from Germany, Delta Air Lines from the US, Swiss International Air, and TUS Airways from Cyprus. Some other flights, like those going to Newark and JFK airports in the US, were delayed by around 90 minutes.
Reports say that the missile was launched by Houthi rebels from Yemen and it hit close to Ben Gurion Airport. It created a large cloud of smoke and made many people at the airport panic. The strike happened less than an hour before Air India’s flight was supposed to land.
Emergency services said that four people were hurt because of the missile. Two more people were injured while they were running to take shelter. Because of the attack, air traffic at the airport was stopped for a short time.
A senior Israeli police officer, Yair Hetzroni, showed the damage to reporters. He pointed to a big hole near the Terminal 3 parking area, where the missile hit the ground. The crater is very deep and wide, but thankfully, no serious damage was caused to the airport itself.
In response to the attack, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, warned that anyone who attacks Israel will be hit back even harder. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet with defence officials and ministers to decide what to do next.
The missile strike happened at a time when Israel is planning to expand its military actions in Gaza. These military operations had started again in March after a two-month break. The Houthi rebels have said they will continue to launch more attacks on Israel if the fighting goes on.
