Middle Eastern Hubs Take Center Stage Amid Shifts in Global Tourism Industry

As international tourism traffic is projected to surpass pre-pandemic levels this year, a recent report titled In the Mind of Global Travelers reveals how evolving traveler expectations are transforming the tourism landscape. Released at the Future Hospitality Summit in Dubai, the report indicates that emerging destinations are increasingly capturing the attention of global travelers, signaling a significant shift in tourism trends.

While iconic destinations remain popular, concerns about over-tourism are rising, creating promising opportunities for emerging markets. The Middle East, in particular, is well-positioned to capitalize on these trends due to substantial investments in tourism infrastructure and visionary projects.

“Tourism in the Middle East is still in its early stages, and it takes time to build a strong reputation. It’s encouraging to see emerging destinations like the Red Sea coastline, the Albanian Riviera, Patagonia, and Lijiang making it onto tourists’ shortlists. This indicates that with ongoing asset development and strategic marketing, countries in the region can establish themselves as increasingly attractive global destinations,” commented Pascal Armoudom, Partner at Kearney Middle East & Africa.

When examining travelers' evolving preferences, the report highlights a clear demand for destinations that combine leisure and urban experiences. While sun, sea, and lifestyle remain top choices, Dubai ranks fourth globally as a preferred destination, following Miami, the Bahamas, and the Maldives.

A notable trend is the increasing popularity of ecotourism, particularly among millennials. These travelers are actively seeking sustainable experiences that connect them with nature while minimizing environmental impact. A striking 86% of respondents aged 25-34 expressed a strong preference for destinations that prioritize environmental sustainability, including green mobility options and eco-friendly accommodations. This trend presents a significant opportunity for destinations and service providers that emphasize sustainability and eco-innovation.

Moreover, wellness travel is becoming mainstream across various demographics, with the market expected to grow substantially in the coming years. Family-friendly wellness resorts and specialized retreats focusing on weight management and mental wellness are key drivers of this growth. Younger travelers, especially Gen Z and millennials, are increasingly drawn to experiential and events-based tourism, creating economic opportunities for destinations hosting major events.

“Emerging destinations, including those in the Middle East, have a unique chance to set new standards and offer exceptional experiences as popular global spots face overcrowding. By strategically developing appealing alternatives, these locations can attract more tourists and contribute to economic growth,” stated Marc Biosca, Partner at Kearney Middle East & Africa.

“Success will require a delicate balance between top-down directives and a comprehensive understanding of market dynamics and visitor preferences, aligned with global best practices. Data-driven insights will be crucial for staying ahead of travelers’ expectations, embracing sustainability, and continuously innovating to meet their evolving demands,” concluded Pascal Armoudom.

As competition in the travel market intensifies, this report provides valuable insights into global travelers’ changing preferences and expectations, guiding tourism authorities, developers, and destinations in tailoring their offerings, identifying opportunities, and competing with established industry leaders. The analysis is based on an extensive global survey of 1,700 respondents across nine countries, aiming to better understand what influences today's travelers' decisions.
