Thrilling Start to 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL): Mumbai Indians Clinch Victory in Last-Ball Drama
Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) triumphed over Delhi Capitals (DC) in a gripping opening match of the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL). A debutant, S Sajana, stole the show with a last-ball six, securing a four-wicket win.
Early Setbacks for MI:
Chasing 172, MI faced early setbacks as Hayley Mathews and Nat Sciver-Brunt fell early. Arundhati Reddy's breakthroughs put MI under pressure.
Bhatia and Kaur's Partnership:
Yastika Bhatia and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the ship, with Bhatia's half-century keeping MI in contention. However, Reddy's dismissal of Bhatia added tension.
DC's Comeback Efforts:
With 52 runs needed in five overs, DC seemed in control. Alice Capsey's late wickets increased the pressure, but the skipper Kaur's 55-run innings kept MI in the game.
Sajana's Debut Heroics:
In a dramatic twist, debutant S Sajana smashed a six off the final ball, securing a remarkable victory for MI.
Capsey Shines for DC:
Earlier, Capsey's brilliant 75-run innings propelled DC to 171/5. Despite some breakthroughs, including Sciver-Brunt's dismissal of DC skipper Meg Lanning, Capsey dominated the bowlers.
Rodrigues' Flourish:
Jemimah Rodrigues' quick 42 added the final flourish for DC, putting them in a commanding position at the halfway mark.
Debutants Make Impact:
MI introduced debutants Keerthana Balakrishnan, Shabnim Ismail, and S Sajana, while DC included Annabel Sutherland. The match showcased the talent and excitement of the Women's Premier League. 🏏
