The Mexican military reported the killing of 19 suspected members of the Sinaloa cartel during a shootout in the northwestern state of Sinaloa. This incident occurred in the capital city, Culiacan, where over 30 armed men opened fire on soldiers, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire on Monday. The Ministry of National Defense confirmed the deaths of the cartel members in a statement released on Tuesday.

The violence has surged in Sinaloa since the arrest of the cartel’s co-founder, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia, in July. Zambada is currently facing trial in the United States, leading to increased intra-cartel violence as factions vie for control. The military indicated that those killed were believed to be affiliated with Zambada’s faction.

During the shootout, authorities also apprehended a local cartel leader identified as Edwin Antonio “N.” The other assailants managed to flee the scene when troops returned fire. In the aftermath, the military seized seven vehicles and nearly 30 firearms, including machine guns, military-style vests, and helmets.

Zambada, 76, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the 38-year-old son of another infamous co-founder, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, were arrested on July 25 near El Paso, Texas. Zambada has accused Guzman Lopez of kidnapping him and handing him over to U.S. authorities. Since 2019, El Chapo has been serving a life sentence in the U.S. for drug trafficking.

In September, Zambada pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including drug trafficking and murder, during a court appearance in New York. Guzman Lopez has also pleaded not guilty to similar charges in a federal court in Chicago.

The escalation of gang violence in Sinaloa has been alarming, with official data indicating approximately 200 people killed and over 300 reported missing since early September alone. The ongoing turmoil is part of a broader pattern of violence linked to drug trafficking in Mexico, which has led to over 450,000 murders since 2006, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by the Mexican government in combating organized crime and ensuring public safety.
