Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, best known for her performance in the popular 2001 television series Meteor Garden, has succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 48. According to local media reports, she died.
Barbie Hsu is one of the biggest stars in Mandarin-speaking countries. She became famous not only in Taiwan but also in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. It was through the dubbed version of Meteor Garden that she became well-known in most parts of Asia.
Confirmed by Dee Hsu, her sister, on Monday, this death happened. According to Dee, Barbie fell ill while the family was on vacation in Japan during the Lunar New Year. Barbie's pneumonia was apparently brought on by influenza.

Barbie had previously experienced health problems including epilepsy and heart disease and has been to hospital due to her seizures at different times in her life. Barbie is survived by her husband South Korean DJ and singer, DJ Koo and two children whom she bore for her ex-husband.
Barbie Hsu started off at the young age of 17 as part of a pop duo with her sister Dee. They became popular TV hosts, adored for their energetic and humorous style. However, it was Meteor Garden that made Barbie a star. The show, based on a popular 1990s Japanese comic, was about a teenage girl from a middle-class family who gets involved with rich students at an elite school. The main role was played by Barbie as Shancai, and her co-stars were from the Taiwanese boyband F4, which went on to become one of the largest Mandopop groups of the 2000s.
Following Meteor Garden, Barbie Hsu starred in several more television dramas and movies, such as Corner With Love and Summer's Desire. In 2012, she announced a break from acting but has appeared on various reality shows.
Many fans responded through social media saying how they can't believe such news has arisen. A Chinese fan from the platform Weibo wrote, "I cannot believe it." To many people, she had a childhood to relate to while many others recalled seeing her as she played in the popular show Meteor Garden. The show was a huge hit in many countries, and its influence is still felt today. The male characters, especially, inspired fashion trends, and the series was so popular in the Philippines that it aired multiple times.
Even though Barbie stepped back from acting, her legacy remains strong. Meteor Garden has been remade in countries like Japan, South Korea, China, and India, introducing Barbie's character to new generations of fans.
In light of the spreading news of her death, the fans all across Asia were reminiscing about her role in making their childhood memorable. A social media post of one fan mentioned, "Big S has always been part of my youth." Another fan was quoted saying, "Meteor Garden raised an entire generation of Asians. Thank you, Barbie Hsu, for giving life to Shancai."
