In her newly published memoir, Melania Trump opens up about her deep sense of betrayal over the 2016 plagiarism scandal, where she was accused of copying Michelle Obama’s speech. The former First Lady places the blame squarely on the campaign staff, particularly pointing out one individual for the failure to prevent the embarrassing incident.

Melania reflects on how her speech contained passages nearly identical to those from Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech. She acknowledges the “undeniable similarities” between the two and expresses frustration over the lack of a proper review process. She writes, “Why was the speech not vetted?” — a question that lingers in her reflections on the event.
Melania shares that Meredith McIver, a long-time family friend and in-house writer, had helped her craft the speech. She reveals that she admired Michelle Obama’s speech, particularly its focus on values such as hard work, integrity, and kindness — principles that resonated with her upbringing in Slovenia. While working with McIver, Melania focused on these values and their importance for parents to instill in their children. She had confidence in McIver and the campaign to ensure the speech was suitable.
Initially, Melania’s speech was well-received, but that positive reception was quickly overshadowed by accusations of plagiarism. Melania recalls feeling devastated by how similar her speech was to Michelle Obama’s and says, “The weight of this realization hit me with a force I had never experienced.” In hindsight, she believes she had placed too much trust in others to handle such a significant responsibility.
In the midst of the controversy, Melania turned to her husband, Donald Trump, asking out of frustration, “Why was the speech not vetted?” While Donald shared her disappointment, he could not provide an answer. Ultimately, McIver issued a public apology, taking responsibility for the oversight. She explained, “This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant.”
Despite the apology, Melania notes that “the damage was done.” She criticizes the campaign’s negligence and reflects on how the failure left her feeling “completely abandoned” during one of the most important moments of her public life. The ordeal, she says, marked a painful experience of betrayal from those she trusted.
