A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck off the coast of Davao Oriental in the southern Philippines on Friday morning, October 10, 2025. The quake occurred at 9:43 AM local time, approximately 62 kilometers southeast of Manay town, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake was caused by movement along a fault in the Philippine Trench.
The tremor sent residents fleeing from buildings and homes in panic. Power outages were reported in several areas, and communication lines were disrupted. In Davao City, located about 250 kilometers west of the epicenter, children were evacuated from schools, and cracks were observed in buildings, including the international airport, which remained operational despite the damage. In the town of Gov. Generoso, over 50 students were hospitalized due to injuries or distress following the quake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert indicating that hazardous waves were possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter. Warnings were extended to parts of Indonesia and Palau. However, the threat was later lifted after small tsunami waves were observed in some areas, including Tandag City in Surigao del Sur, where a wave height of approximately 0.30 meters was recorded.
As of the latest reports, at least 179 aftershocks have been recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 5.8. The strongest aftershock, measuring 5.9, occurred just eight minutes after the main earthquake. Authorities continue to assess the situation and have activated emergency response teams to assist affected communities.
This earthquake follows a deadly 6.9-magnitude quake that struck Cebu Province on September 30, 2025, resulting in at least 74 deaths and over 1,000 injuries. The Philippines, situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," remains on high alert as officials monitor ongoing seismic activity in the region.
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow evacuation orders if issued. Authorities continue to prioritize public safety and are working to restore normalcy in the impacted regions.
