The match was mostly controlled by Marseille, but they had to wait until the 69th minute to score. Adrien Rabiot headed in a corner from Amine Gouiri to break the deadlock. Five minutes later, substitute Neal Maupay played a quick pass with Gouiri before scoring the second goal. Maupay, who joined from Everton this season, now has four goals.
Rabiot has been in great form, scoring three headers in the last five matches. Gouiri, who joined from Rennes in January, made an instant impact in his first start. Another new signing, Algeria's Ismael Bennacer, also impressed after joining on loan from AC Milan.
Marseille have been excellent in away games, winning nine out of eleven. However, they are still 10 points behind PSG, who won 4-1 against Monaco on Friday. PSG are preparing for their Champions League match against Brest on Tuesday and are the clear favorites to win.
Earlier on Sunday, Lyon earned their first victory under new coach Paulo Fonseca, beating Reims 4-0. Nicolas Tagliafico opened the scoring late in the first half, assisted by Corentin Tolisso. Tolisso later doubled the lead with a goal from a Rayan Cherki free kick. Cherki himself scored the third goal, and Georges Mikautadze added another in stoppage time. Reims played with 10 men after Patrick Zabi was sent off.
Lyon had lost 3-2 to Marseille last weekend in Fonseca’s first game after replacing Pierre Sage as coach. Sunday's win, their first in eight matches, lifted them to sixth place in the league. Meanwhile, Reims, under new coach Samba Diawara, are now 14th, just four points above the relegation zone.
In other games, Strasbourg won 2-0 against bottom-placed Montpellier, with Dutch forward Emanuel Emegha scoring his ninth goal of the season. Toulouse and Auxerre played a 2-2 draw, with Toulouse coming from behind twice. Auxerre have now gone nine league games without a win.
