Over the past year, a troubling rise in violence from Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank has been documented, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reporting at least 1,423 incidents. This averages out to roughly four attacks per day. Since October 7, the situation has intensified, coinciding with an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as reports indicate that settlers are often acting under the protection of Israeli soldiers.
The most affected areas include the Ramallah and el-Bireh governorate, which recorded 321 incidents, followed closely by Nablus with 319 and Hebron with 298. The highest frequency of attacks occurred in October 2023, leading to deaths and extensive property damage. Notably, this surge in violence followed the Hamas-led attacks on Israel, prompting far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to arm settlers with semiautomatic rifles and other weapons. Over 120,000 firearms have been distributed to Israeli settlers since then, with many more obtaining conditional approvals.

The United Nations has warned that the situation could deteriorate dramatically if Israeli security forces continue to employ unlawful lethal force and overlook violence perpetrated by settlers. Israeli settlements, established on Palestinian land seized by force, have grown significantly, with around 700,000 Israeli settlers living in at least 250 settlements and outposts across the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.
The expansion of settlements has accelerated, particularly after October 2023, with Israeli authorities approving the construction of approximately 3,500 new housing units, adding to the nearly 20,000 units approved in the previous year. This expansion and the associated violence have resulted in significant displacement among Palestinians; in the past year alone, about 4,555 Palestinians have been forced from their homes due to demolitions carried out by Israeli forces.
Since the outbreak of the current conflict in Gaza, which has claimed over 42,000 lives, at least 744 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, including 164 children. Additionally, more than 6,250 individuals have sustained injuries, illustrating the ongoing impact of the violence and the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
