Man Sues China Hospital Over Electric Shocks While Awaiting Sex Change Surgery

In China, a man awaiting sex reassignment surgery has filed an 80,000 yuan (approximately Rs 9.4 lakh) lawsuit against a hospital, claiming he was coerced into receiving electroshock treatment. The case highlights the significant cultural and familial pressures surrounding gender transition in the country.

The 27-year-old, identified as Linger, is a live-streamer from Hebei province. Known for his videos featuring women's clothing and makeup, Linger has expressed his identity as female despite being assigned male at birth. He has been undergoing hormone therapy with oestrogen, leading to physical changes such as long hair, a softer voice, and reduced facial hair. Linger has saved money from his live-streaming activities to fund his gender reassignment surgery.

However, his decision to transition has faced severe familial opposition. In China, traditional views hold that a person’s body is a gift from their parents and that altering one's gender is disrespectful. This cultural perspective has led to ongoing disputes between Linger and his family.

In 2022, to avoid further family conflict, Linger agreed to visit a hospital known for treating psychiatric patients. Despite not considering himself mentally ill, he was diagnosed with "anxiety disorder" and "ego-dystonic sexual orientation," a condition marked by a conflict between a person’s self-perceived and actual sexual orientation. Linger claims that once admitted, he was forcibly restrained and subjected to electroshock therapy over several days.

According to Linger, he was tied to a bed, and hospital staff controlled his body while administering the shocks. He argues that these actions violated his human rights and has demanded compensation for the distress caused.

The hospital, Jiulongshan Hospital, has defended its actions, asserting that the electroshock therapy was administered to manage the emotional state of psychiatric patients and enhance their self-awareness. They also contend that Linger's mother consented to the treatment. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and the hospital maintains it has acted appropriately within its scope of treatment.

The case has drawn attention to the broader societal and cultural challenges faced by individuals undergoing gender transition in China, highlighting the ongoing tension between personal identity and traditional values.
