Nitesh Kumar was facing serious charges, including rape and murder under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The police chief of Hubballi, Shashi Kumar, explained that the man was from Patna, Bihar. The police team had taken him to his place of stay to check his identity when he suddenly attacked them. During the attack, he also damaged a police vehicle. Despite a warning shot, Nitesh tried to run away. The police fired two more rounds at him. He was taken to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The police officer who fired the shots, Sub-inspector Annapurna, helped capture Nitesh after he was shot.
Union Minister and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi said the situation was unfortunate. He mentioned that the accused was very violent towards the police, which led to the action being taken. He also spoke about the victim's parents, saying they are daily wage workers. He suggested that the government should help them financially so they can take care of their other child, who is differently-abled.
The incident began when Nitesh Kumar kidnapped the little girl, allegedly sexually assaulted her, and then killed her. The girl’s parents are from Koppal district. The girl's mother works as a house helper and at a beauty parlour, while her father is a painter. On the day of the incident, the mother had taken her daughter to work with her. While she was working in a nearby house, the girl was taken by an unknown man.
After searching for the girl, the police found her body in the bathroom of a small building near where she had disappeared. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead there.
The police used CCTV footage to track down the suspect, which led them to Nitesh Kumar. Many residents gathered at the police station, demanding justice for the little girl.
