Belgrade, Serbia: A Serbian police officer was tragically killed on Saturday in front of the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, in what Prime Minister Milos Vucevic termed a "heinous terrorist act". The incident occurred around 11:00 am local time when the officer, stationed outside the embassy, was shot in the neck with a crossbow by an assailant.
Authorities swiftly responded as the officer, in self-defense, discharged his firearm, fatally injuring the attacker, identified as a 25-year-old man who had recently converted to Islam. Born in 1999 in Mladenovac, a town approximately 50 kilometers from Belgrade, the assailant had moved to Novi Pazar, a historical center of the Bosniak Muslim minority in Serbia.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed that the attacker had ties to individuals suspected of affiliations with the Wahhabi movement, an ultra-conservative branch of Islam prominent in Saudi Arabia. Precautionary arrests were made, including a man from Belgrade previously detained for managing militant websites advocating jihad, though he had been released earlier.

President Aleksandar Vucic assured the public of enhanced security measures across Belgrade, noting ongoing searches and efforts to locate additional suspects connected to the attack. The wounded officer, aged 34, underwent emergency surgery and was reported to be recovering in hospital.
Israeli officials praised the swift response of Serbian authorities and expressed gratitude for their support following the attempted attack. The Israeli embassy remained closed, with no staff members harmed during the incident.
In response to the escalating situation, Serbia has heightened security in the capital while special prosecutors take charge of the investigation. Senad Halitovic, Serbia's top Islamic cleric, denounced the attack, emphasizing that such acts contradict Islamic teachings and expressing solidarity with the injured officer.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about terrorism in the region, prompting a unified response from Serbian officials to ensure public safety and maintain diplomatic integrity amidst international support and condemnation.
