On Monday, authorities in Moscow arrested a medic accused of "Satanism" and promoting same-sex relationships, as part of an ongoing crackdown on LGBTQ rights amid a broader push for "traditional family values." The arrest highlights the increasingly hostile environment for LGBTQ individuals in Russia, a trend that has intensified since the country deployed troops to Ukraine in 2022.
The suspect, who is the head of a medical institution in the central Ulyanovsk region, was taken into custody by the Federal Security Service (FSB). The agency claimed that he was a supporter of Satanism and allegedly encouraged his subordinate employees to engage in same-sex relations as part of a process to initiate them into devil worship.
The FSB's statement emphasized that the medic misled individuals by suggesting that adopting this so-called cult would lead to financial prosperity and career advancement. As a result, a criminal case has been initiated against him for coercing individuals to engage in sexual acts and participate in an extremist organization.

The FSB also released a video showing the medic being arrested at his apartment, where he was taken away by masked officers in camouflage uniforms.
This case is emblematic of a broader trend in Russia, where state authorities have ramped up efforts to stifle LGBTQ rights. In November of the previous year, the government enacted a ban on what it termed the "international LGBT movement." Currently, Russia ranks last in Europe regarding laws and policies affecting LGBTQ individuals, according to a recent assessment.
The rise of the Orthodox Church’s influence in Russian society has contributed to this conservative shift, with authorities increasingly promoting traditional values while vilifying LGBTQ identities. The climate of fear and repression has left many LGBTQ individuals in Russia feeling vulnerable and isolated, as the state takes a firmer stance against any form of sexual or gender diversity.
