Maldives Bans Israeli Passport Holders: What's Next?

Amidst escalating tensions fueled by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Maldives has taken a bold stance by prohibiting the entry of visitors holding Israeli passports. This move, announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following a recommendation from the Cabinet, reflects the nation's solidarity with Palestinians and serves as a form of protest against Israel's military actions in Gaza.

The decision to ban Israeli passport holders was made public through a statement from the president's office. Although official details regarding the ban were not immediately provided, the government has declared its intention to amend existing laws to enforce the prohibition effectively. Additionally, a subcommittee has been established to oversee the implementation of these measures.

President Muizzu has further announced a national fundraising campaign in support of Palestinians, coupled with plans for a nationwide rally titled "Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine."

This ban comes in the wake of mounting pressure on President Muizzu from opposition parties and government allies alike, following his condemnation of an Israeli airstrike in Rafah that claimed the lives of 45 people, including civilians seeking refuge in what was previously deemed a safe zone.

Israel's Foreign Ministry swiftly responded to the ban by advising its citizens, including those with dual nationality, to avoid traveling to the Maldives. Expressing concerns over potential difficulties in providing assistance to Israeli citizens in distress, the ministry cautioned those already in the country to consider leaving.

While the Maldives had previously lifted a ban on Israeli tourists in the early 1990s and attempted to normalize relations in 2010, progress towards diplomatic reconciliation faced obstacles following the ousting of former president Mohamed Nasheed in 2012.

According to official data from the Maldives government, the number of Israeli nationals visiting the country has seen a significant decline, with only 528 visitors recorded in the first four months of 2024 compared to 4,644 during the same period last year.

Notably, the Maldives is not the only country to restrict entry for Israeli passport holders. Countries such as Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen have also been cited as nations where Israeli citizens are not permitted entry.

In response to a viral post listing countries that deny entry to Israeli citizens, Israel's official social media handle nonchalantly stated, "We're good," underscoring the country's resolve despite geopolitical challenges.

Israeli law designates Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Iran as enemy nations, requiring special permits for Israeli citizens to visit these countries, underscoring the complexities surrounding travel restrictions amid ongoing regional tensions.
