Malaysia Resumes MH370 Search Based on "Credible" New Proposal

Malaysia is preparing to resume the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which disappeared in 2014 with 239 people on board. This decision follows a "credible" proposal from Ocean Infinity, a marine exploration company based in the United States. The proposal, submitted in June 2024, suggests a new search area of 15,000 square kilometers in the southern Indian Ocean, off the coast of Western Australia.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed in Parliament on November 5, 2024, that discussions with Ocean Infinity were progressing well. The search would operate under a "no find, no fee" arrangement, meaning Malaysia would only incur costs if the wreckage is located. This structure aims to minimize financial risk for the country.

Ocean Infinity has requested a $70 million fee for locating the wreckage. The company, known for its expertise in marine robotics, previously attempted a search for MH370 in 2018 but was unsuccessful. However, Ocean Infinity now believes it has gathered enough scientific evidence to determine the plane's final location.

CEO Oliver Plunkett said, “We now feel in a position to be able to return to the search for MH370, and have submitted a proposal to the Malaysian government. Finding MH370 and bringing some resolution for all connected with the loss of the aircraft has been a constant in our minds since we left the southern Indian Ocean in 2018."

The initial search for the missing flight spanned large areas of Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, involving ships and aircraft from multiple countries, including the US, UK, China, and Australia. Despite the massive scale of the search, no substantial wreckage was found, and the effort was officially suspended in 2017. Ocean Infinity’s 2018 search also ended without success.

The new search comes as legal proceedings continue regarding compensation for the families of passengers, particularly from China. Over 40 Chinese families are involved in compensation claims, and the Chinese government has expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s continued commitment to resolving the case.

The renewed search effort for MH370 gives families and the broader public hope that the mystery surrounding the flight could finally be solved.
