Louvre Abu Dhabi has introduced a new Fellowships and Grants Programme aimed at promoting innovative research in art and history. This initiative invites scholars and museum professionals from around the globe to engage with the museum, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and supporting fresh perspectives within the international art scene.
The programme is organized around three primary thematic areas: the Global History of Museums and Collections, the Circulation of Styles, Images and Texts, and Precious Materials and Routes of Exchange. These themes will guide research topics that extend the museum's ongoing commitment to advancing art history research on a global scale.

To facilitate this research, the museum will leverage its state-of-the-art research facilities, including the Resource Centre, the Conservation Centre, and a pioneering Scientific Laboratory for artwork material analysis—the first of its kind in the Gulf region. The programme plans to host symposiums, workshops, and produce publications to encourage meaningful dialogue and disseminate knowledge about the museum’s extensive collections while examining broader themes in art history and heritage science.
The initiative seeks to foster a vibrant academic community, enhancing the understanding of the cultural narratives embedded within the artworks on display. His Excellency Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT), emphasized the importance of Abu Dhabi's transformation into a global cultural hub. He stated that it is essential for cultural institutions to engage with the global discourse, benefiting from diverse perspectives. This grant programme aims to attract talent worldwide, generating new insights into shared human experiences.
To kick off the Fellowships and Grants Programme, Louvre Abu Dhabi is offering both short- and long-term fellowships designed to support local and international scholars in their research endeavors. Short-term fellows, whose projects last three months, will receive financial support of AED 85,000, while long-term fellows, engaged for nine months, will receive AED 245,000.
In 2025, the programme will also introduce institutional grants aimed at fostering collaborative research projects between Louvre Abu Dhabi and other cultural institutions, including museums, research centers, and universities. These grants will support initiatives that further the museum’s mission of promoting cultural exchange and dialogue.
Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, noted that the programme aligns with the museum's mission to serve as a universal museum that not only collects and exhibits global artistic heritage but also contributes to its preservation and understanding. By providing scholars with the necessary resources and support for pioneering research, the museum reaffirms its commitment to deepening global knowledge and fostering cross-cultural dialogue.
Dr. Guilhem André, Director of Scientific, Curatorial and Collections Management at Louvre Abu Dhabi, expressed the program's goal of collaborating with scholars and institutions worldwide, offering essential support for researchers and museum professionals. He highlighted that this initiative will enable deeper engagement with the museum’s collections and contribute significantly to the global discourse on art, heritage, and museum studies.
Researchers and scholars specializing in art history, archaeology, museum studies, heritage science, conservation, and related fields are encouraged to submit proposals aligned with one of the three thematic axes. Applications are open until January 10, 2025, with selected applicants expected to be announced by March 2025. A committee of distinguished museum representatives and experts will oversee the selection process, evaluating all submissions thoroughly, with potential interviews as part of the review process. Proposals must be submitted online in English through the museum’s official website.
