Following a weekend of intense rainfall that swept across the UAE, a peculiar sight emerged in Sharjah: car number plates protruding from pavements, an aftermath of the heavy downpour. Particularly noticeable along Sharjah's Al Khan Interchange and Jamal Abdul Nasir Street, these displaced plates likely belong to drivers who navigated through inundated roads during the deluge. Teams from the Sharjah Municipality tirelessly worked day and night to restore order, combing through water ponds to retrieve dozens of misplaced number plates.
Efforts to alleviate the situation involved placing the recovered plates along the roadside, strategically wedged between the blocks comprising the walkways for enhanced visibility. Along Jamal Abdul Nasir Street, the plates found temporary refuge on the adjacent grass, serving as a visual repository for motorists seeking to reclaim their lost identifiers. On Monday, a steady stream of residents flocked to the makeshift display, diligently scouring for their missing plates amidst the aftermath of the storm.
Among the concerned individuals was Raju Kumal, a Nepalese national, who made a pilgrimage to Al Khan Interchange in pursuit of his vehicle's front number plate, lost amid the treacherous waters that engulfed the roads the previous day. Reflecting on the incident, Kumal recounted the urgency he felt while traversing through knee-high floodwaters, fearing potential damage to his vehicle and subsequent entrapment. While Al Khan Interchange began to regain its composure, Jamal Abdul Nasir Street remained submerged, prompting continuous efforts by trucks to expel the lingering water.
In neighboring Dubai, the repercussions of driving without a plate or with a damaged one carry significant financial penalties, potentially amounting to fines of up to Dh3,000 and a staggering 23 black points. To address the predicament of lost plates, motorists can avail themselves of the Dubai Police app, facilitating the application process for a lost certificate. Requirements include a letter in Arabic from a relevant entity detailing the circumstances of the loss, alongside pertinent identification documents such as the Emirates ID, passport, and email address.
Navigating the bureaucratic maze incurs nominal fees, with Dh70 allocated for service and knowledge charges, supplemented by an additional Dh100 for in-person submissions at service centers. This procedural avenue provides a semblance of recourse for motorists grappling with the repercussions of nature's whims, offering a tangible pathway towards redress amidst the inconvenience and financial burden incurred.
As communities grapple with the aftermath of inclement weather, the resilience and collaborative spirit exhibited by municipal authorities and residents alike serve as a testament to the collective resolve in overcoming adversity. Despite the challenges posed by natural calamities, the concerted efforts to restore normalcy underscore the unwavering commitment towards safeguarding public safety and communal well-being, echoing the spirit of resilience ingrained within the fabric of UAE's society.
