Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting has recently been thrust into the spotlight due to a heated gender eligibility debate affecting the Paris 2024 Olympics. The controversy surrounding her has sparked significant discussion as she prepares to compete.
Lin Yu-Ting, a decorated athlete with a track record of success, is set to begin her campaign at the Paris Olympics today. She will face Sitora Turdibekova from Uzbekistan in the 57-kilogram category. Lin, who first stepped into the amateur boxing arena at the Asian Championships in Vietnam in 2017, has achieved remarkable milestones in her career.
Starting her boxing journey in middle school in Taipei back in 2008, Lin quickly made a name for herself. By the age of 21, she clinched a gold medal at the Asian Championships in Ho Chi Minh City in 2017, defeating Vietnam's Le Thi Bang in the bantamweight division. Her impressive performance continued as she secured another bantamweight gold medal the following year.

Her accolades include gold medals at the 2019 Asian Championships, the 2022 Asian Games, and the 2022 World Championships. Lin is also a two-time Asian Games medallist, with a featherweight gold in 2023 and a flyweight bronze in 2018. Her victory at the Asian Games guaranteed her spot at the Paris Olympics, where she entered as the top-seeded boxer in the women's 57kg featherweight category, earning a first-round bye before her bout against Turdibekova.
Currently ranked third in the global standings for Elite Women’s 54-kg featherweight, the 28-year-old made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, where she was defeated by Filipino boxer Nesthy Petecio in the featherweight round of 16.
However, Lin’s journey has not been without controversy. In 2023, she and Imane Khelif were disqualified from the women’s world championships after failing a gender eligibility test. The governing body also stripped Lin of a bronze medal, citing her failure to meet certain unspecified biochemical eligibility requirements. This decision has added another layer to the ongoing debate about gender and eligibility in sports.
