At least 42 migrants are missing and presumed dead after a rubber boat capsized off the Libyan coast, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Libyan authorities rescued seven survivors who had been drifting at sea for six days following the incident near the Al Buri oilfield.
The vessel, carrying 49 people, encountered trouble in the Mediterranean, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous sea crossings. Survivors were reportedly exhausted, dehydrated, and in critical condition upon rescue. They received immediate medical attention from Libyan authorities.
“This tragic incident underscores the ongoing risks for migrants attempting to reach Europe via Libya,” the IOM said. “Safe and legal migration pathways remain urgently needed to prevent further loss of life.”
The rescue operation involved Libyan Coast Guard units who located the survivors after days adrift. Authorities continue searching for the missing individuals, though hopes are dwindling due to the time spent at sea.
This latest tragedy is part of a larger humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, where thousands of migrants risk their lives annually fleeing conflict, poverty, and instability in Africa and the Middle East. International organizations have repeatedly called for stronger cooperation between countries to ensure migrant safety and curb human smuggling.
The IOM stressed that urgent measures, including search and rescue missions and humanitarian aid, are essential to mitigate further tragedies along these dangerous maritime routes.
