In a significant development under the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, the first FIR was lodged today against a street vendor near New Delhi Railway Station. The FIR, filed under Section 285 of the new code, cited obstruction of public way due to the vendor's stall selling water bottles and gutkha. The police action came after a patrol officer noticed the vendor's stall blocking the road last night.

According to details from the FIR obtained, the vendor, identified as Pankaj Kumar from Patna, Bihar, had set up his stall near a foot overbridge. Despite repeated requests from the sub-inspector on duty to relocate the stall, citing public inconvenience, the vendor allegedly refused to comply. Subsequently, the FIR was registered, detailing the obstruction caused and the officer's efforts to resolve the situation peacefully.

The new criminal codes—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—have been implemented today, replacing colonial-era laws like the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure.
