In 2024, Kiran Rao made a new movie called Laapataa Ladies. She worked on this film with Aamir Khan, who is her ex-husband and a famous actor. The film gave a chance to new actors like Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav. They acted with famous stars Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. The story was written by Biplab Goswami. People loved the movie, and it was even sent for the Oscars as India’s entry. Many fans and critics praised it. But now, the film is in the news for a bad reason.

Many people say that Laapataa Ladies copied an old Arabic short film called Burqa City, which came out in 2019. Clips of this old film are now spreading on the internet. In Burqa City, a man loses his wife because she wears a burqa, and another woman in a burqa gets mixed up with her. In Laapataa Ladies, two new brides get mixed up on a train because they both wear a ghoonghat (a cloth covering the face). One scene looks the same in both movies. In this scene, the husband goes to the police and shows a picture of his wife, but her face is covered.
People on social media are very angry. One person wrote, “Bollywood has no new ideas! Everything is copied!” Another person said, “They took the story, changed small things, and said it is their own.” Some also feel that the story was changed from a Muslim setting to a Hindu one on purpose. A tweet said, “They sent this film to the Oscars as an original story? They just changed burqas to ghoonghats and called it new!”
Some people also remember a 1999 movie called Ghoonghat Ke Pat Kholi, which had a similar story. The director of that film even said last year that Laapataa Ladies reminds him of his movie. Others remember an old TV show on Doordarshan in the 90s that had the same idea of two brides getting mixed up on a train. One person wrote, “There was a TV film on DD Metro in the early 2000s with the same story—brides getting swapped because of ghoonghats on a train.”
Now, people are waiting for Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan to say something about these claims. But for now, many believe that Bollywood is once again copying stories instead of making new ones.
