A tragic fire engulfed a seven-storey building in Mangaf, Kuwait, on July 12, claiming the lives of 50 people, including 46 Indians. Kuwaiti authorities determined that an electrical short circuit in the guard's room on the ground floor sparked the devastating blaze. The building housed 196 migrant workers, primarily Indians, and efforts to extinguish the flames were met with great difficulty.
In response to the immense loss, Kuwait's Emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, ordered compensation of USD 15,000 (approximately Rs 12.5 lakh) for each victim's family. This gesture aims to provide financial support during their time of grief. The compensation process will be overseen by the victims' respective embassies to ensure swift distribution.

The Arab Times reported the issuance of funds through the embassies to expedite assistance to affected families, acknowledging the urgency and importance of delivering aid promptly. The tragic incident not only prompted Kuwait's response but also led to actions by the Indian government, which announced Rs 2 lakh compensation per deceased Indian national and additional financial aid from the Kerala state government for affected families from the region.
The victims included 24 Malayalis among the Indians, highlighting the widespread impact of the tragedy. Kuwait's public prosecutor initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the fire, focusing on potential negligence in security and safety measures. Several arrests, including a Kuwaiti citizen and foreign nationals, were made in connection with charges of manslaughter and negligence following the incident.
The aftermath of the Mangaf fire underscores the importance of robust safety protocols and international cooperation in ensuring the well-being of migrant workers and residents in Kuwait. The tragic loss has prompted collective efforts to address safety gaps and provide timely support to grieving families affected by the devastating blaze.
