Kuwait's Emir, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmed al-Sabah, has granted approval to a new cabinet, marking a significant development in the midst of a political crisis. This move comes just two days after the dissolution of the recently elected parliament, with the emir and the new government assuming certain powers previously held by the assembly. Citing "interference" by lawmakers, the emir dissolved the parliament, considered one of the most powerful elected legislatures in the Gulf, and suspended articles of the constitution.
The newly formed government, Kuwait's 46th, is led by Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed al-Abdullah al-Sabah and comprises 13 ministers, including two women. The former oil minister was tasked with forming the government following the dissolution of the National Assembly, which had been elected just two weeks prior. The outgoing premier, Sheikh Mohammad Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah, declined to resume his post amid ongoing tensions between the government and the 50-member National Assembly.

Kuwait's political landscape has long been characterized by a tug-of-war between the government and the ruling family on one side and the Islamist-dominated opposition on the other. In the most recent election held in early April, the opposition once again secured a majority in parliament, maintaining their grip on power. Allegations of corruption against ministers and accusations of hindering development plans by the legislature have fueled tensions, resulting in persistent deadlock and delaying much-needed reforms in the oil-rich Gulf state.
This decision to dissolve the parliament marks the second such move by Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmed al-Sabah since assuming the role of emir in December, following the death of his half-brother and predecessor, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah. The political turmoil in Kuwait reflects broader challenges faced by the country as it navigates internal power struggles and seeks to address pressing socio-economic issues amid a rapidly changing regional landscape.
