A shocking incident happened in Kolkata where a woman in her 30s was killed by her brother-in-law after she rejected his romantic advances. The woman worked as a domestic helper and had been living separately from her husband for two years. She and her brother-in-law, 35-year-old Atiur Rahman Laskar, used to travel to work together every day. But when she started avoiding him and blocked his phone number, Laskar became very angry.
On Thursday evening, after the woman finished work, Laskar forced her to go with him to an under-construction building. Once there, he strangled her, cut off her head, and chopped her body into three parts. He then put her severed head into a plastic bag and dumped it in a garbage vat behind a multi-storey building in the Tollygunge area of south Kolkata. The next morning, on Friday, local people saw the head in the garbage vat and quickly called the police.
The police began investigating the case, and the rest of the woman’s body was found near a pond on Saturday. The discovery of the head led to the police using sniffer dogs and reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas. The initial checks on the head showed injury marks and bloodstains, which suggested that the woman had been killed less than 12 hours before the head was found. The police also collected evidence from the garbage vat on Graham Road, where the head had been dumped.
Atiur Rahman Laskar, the woman’s brother-in-law, was caught by the police after he admitted to killing her. He told the police that he killed her because she had turned down his romantic proposals many times. Laskar was angry when she started avoiding him, and he even blocked her phone number. On the night of the murder, he forced her to go with him, where he killed her and cut her body into three pieces, throwing the parts in different places.
The police tracked Laskar down to his village, Basuldanga, in Diamond Harbour, South 24 Parganas district. After being found, he was arrested and confessed to his crime. Deputy Commissioner of Police Bidisha Kalita explained that Laskar had been upset because the woman had rejected him.
This terrible act has shocked the people of Kolkata, and the police are continuing to investigate the brutal crime. The community is still in disbelief that something so violent could happen over a simple rejection.
