Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced on Friday that former New Zealand pacer Tim Southee has been appointed as the franchise’s bowling coach for IPL 2026. The decision adds a wealth of experience to KKR’s coaching staff and is expected to strengthen their bowling unit ahead of the upcoming season.

Tim Southee has been one of the most successful fast bowlers in international cricket. Over a 15-year career, he played 107 Test matches, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20 Internationals for New Zealand, claiming a total of 776 international wickets. Renowned for his swing, accuracy, and tactical skills, Southee also captained New Zealand in multiple formats. He was a key player in New Zealand’s 2019 ICC World Cup campaign and the 2021 ICC World Test Championship victory.

Southee is familiar with the Kolkata Knight Riders setup, having been part of the KKR squad in the IPL during 2021, 2022, and 2023 as a player. His understanding of the team culture, players, and the IPL environment makes him well-suited for a coaching role. Southee retired from international cricket in 2025, opening the door for him to take up coaching responsibilities.

Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR, welcomed Southee to the coaching staff, emphasizing his experience and leadership qualities. Mysore said, “We are delighted to welcome Tim Southee back to the KKR family, this time in a coaching capacity. Tim’s technical expertise and calm approach will be invaluable in mentoring our young bowlers. His leadership will help shape our bowling unit ahead of IPL 2026.”

Tim Southee expressed his happiness at returning to KKR in a new capacity. “KKR has always felt like home to me, and it’s an honour to return in this new role. The franchise has a strong culture, passionate fans, and an excellent group of players. I look forward to working closely with the bowlers and helping the team achieve success in IPL 2026,” he said.

Southee’s appointment is expected to benefit KKR’s pace and spin bowlers. His international experience, tactical insights, and ability to guide young talent will play a crucial role in strengthening the team. With the IPL 2026 season approaching, KKR fans can anticipate a well-prepared bowling unit under the mentorship of one of cricket’s finest fast bowlers.

Tim Southee’s transition from international cricket to coaching at KKR marks a new chapter in his career. His return to the franchise reinforces KKR’s focus on building a strong team, nurturing young talent, and competing for the IPL 2026 title. Fans and players alike look forward to seeing his expertise translate into success on the field.
