Freddie Tuilagi made a memorable impression when he visited St. James' Palace recently, clad only in a traditional bark cloth wrap and a necklace historically worn by orator chiefs. The sight of Tuilagi, who moved to the UK to pursue a professional rugby career, brought a lighthearted moment to the royal residence as he demonstrated a traditional Samoan dance for King Charles III. The King, dressed in a blue suit and meticulously knotted tie, was seen grinning and attempting to mimic Tuilagi's dance steps.
Tuilagi revealed that the King expressed genuine interest in learning the dance, saying, “He loves it. He said he wants to learn the dance,” before showcasing his own dance moves again. The enthusiasm for sharing Samoan culture was palpable, and Tuilagi promised even more cultural displays during the King's upcoming visit to Samoa on Wednesday.

As Charles prepares for his trip, Tuilagi noted that villagers throughout Samoa, a nation of 220,000 people, are eagerly decorating their homes and communities to honor the royal visit. The trip holds significant importance as King Charles, who is the symbolic head of the Commonwealth, will be attending a meeting with leaders from the 56 independent nations that comprise the organization. Climate change, an issue Charles has been advocating for decades, is set to be a focal point of the discussions.
Samoa faces dire threats from climate change, including rising sea levels, increasing ocean temperatures, and more severe storms. This royal visit is not just a ceremonial occasion; it serves as a reminder of the urgent challenges confronting Pacific island nations.
The visit has captured global media attention, and many Samoans hope that images of the King and Queen Camilla enjoying the islands’ stunning beaches will help attract European tourists, thereby boosting the local economy. Tuilagi expressed pride in showcasing Samoan culture, saying, “It’s an opportunity to showcase our culture, showcase our heritage and how proud we are as a country.”
He emphasized the significance of hosting the King and the leaders of the Pacific, stating, “To host the king and the leaders of the Pacific, you know, the Commonwealth coming to Samoa is something special for us.”
Tuilagi hopes that his demonstration of Samoan dance and song will resonate with the King during his stay. His choice to wear traditional national attire, which notably includes not wearing a shirt, was a deliberate effort to leave a lasting impression. “It’s not every day the king will see a chief from Samoa topless at the palace,” he joked, capturing the spirit of joy and pride that he aims to share with the royal visitor.
