Karachi Faces 12-Hour Power Outages and Disruptions from 'Kunda' Connections

Residents in Karachi are grappling with extended power outages and rampant electricity theft. Some households experience up to 12 hours of power cuts daily, severely disrupting daily life in the city.

Local residents, including Muhammad Tariq, Farooq Khan, and Babar, report a grueling schedule of outages: power cuts occur between 7:00 am and 8:30 am, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm, and later from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Evenings bring additional interruptions with outages from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm, plus sporadic unscheduled blackouts.

These outages are particularly harsh for laborers who return home from long shifts only to face power disruptions in extreme temperatures. Power often returns only after 1:30 am, forcing residents to stay up late to complete essential chores like refilling water supplies, leaving them exhausted for the next day. Children also struggle to finish their homework during these outages.

Compounding the issue, illegal electricity connections, known as "kunda," are common. Criminal groups exploit the utility’s weaknesses, providing unauthorized electricity to over 250 homes. These operators charge hefty fees, including a PKR 10,000 upfront payment and monthly fees of PKR 3,000.

Karachi Electric (KE), the city’s primary utility provider, is dealing with outdated infrastructure and administrative inefficiencies. While KE has taken steps to address these issues, such as financing new electrical facilities and implementing new regulations, the effects of these measures often take time to fully materialize.
