Veteran Bollywood actress Kamini Kaushal, whose career spanned over seven decades, passed away at the age of 98 at her Mumbai residence on Thursday night. A close family friend confirmed the news of her demise.
Sajan Narain, a close associate of the family, told reporters, “She died at her Mumbai home late on Thursday night. She would have turned 99 in February.” The cause of her death has not yet been disclosed, and the family has not issued an official statement.
Kamini Kaushal was widely regarded as one of the finest actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Born in Lahore, she was the daughter of Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap, a renowned botanist from the University of Punjab, often recognized as the Father of Indian Bryology.
Her acting journey began when Chetan Anand cast her in Neecha Nagar (1946), which went on to win the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film also received acclaim at the Montreal Film Festival, instantly establishing Kamini as a talented newcomer in Indian cinema.
Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, Kamini starred in a series of successful films, including Aag, Shaheed, Nadiya Ke Paar, and Ziddi, becoming one of the highest-paid actresses of the era. Over the years, she shared screen space with legendary actors such as Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor, earning critical and popular acclaim.
In 1963, she shifted to character roles and continued to impress audiences with memorable performances in films like Do Raaste, Prem Nagar, and Maha Chor. Even in the later years of her career, she remained relevant, appearing in blockbuster films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express and Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh. Her final screen appearance was a cameo in Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha.
Kamini Kaushal’s contribution to Indian cinema was immense. She was celebrated not only for her beauty and grace but also for her versatility and ability to bring depth to every role she portrayed. Her legacy as a trailblazer in Bollywood will be remembered for generations, inspiring countless actors who followed in her footsteps.
Fans, colleagues, and film enthusiasts have begun sharing their tributes on social media, highlighting her iconic performances and her remarkable journey in the film industry. Kamini Kaushal’s passing marks the end of an era, but her films and her influence on Indian cinema will remain timeless.
