New Delhi: On Wednesday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris made a call to former President Donald Trump, congratulating him on his victory in the 2024 presidential race. The conversation, confirmed by one of Harris’s senior aides, was a pivotal moment following a fiercely contested and divisive election.
During their discussion, Harris emphasized the critical importance of a peaceful transfer of power and the role of a president who governs for all Americans. She highlighted the need for unity and healing after the bitter campaign. The Vice President is expected to address the nation later today with her formal concession speech in Washington at 2:30 AM IST.
Harris’s call to Trump comes after a highly charged race where, throughout the campaign, she and other Democratic leaders had labeled Trump as a severe threat to the nation’s democracy. Despite these strong criticisms, Harris’s candidacy failed to resonate deeply enough with voters, resulting in a loss.
In 2020, Trump refused to concede his defeat when supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in a violent attack on democracy. This time, however, he won the presidency back, this time with broader margins than before, even amid numerous controversies including criminal charges, two impeachments, and repeated allegations of autocratic tendencies. Trump’s critics had warned of his fascist inclinations, but despite these challenges, he regained the White House.

At 78, Trump will become the oldest president in U.S. history, set to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025. Had Harris won, she would have made history as the first female president of the United States. Trump, in his victory speech, praised the significance of his win, calling it "a political victory that our country has never seen before."
International leaders, many of whom had been uncertain about Trump's policies, quickly sent their congratulations. Among them, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first to reach out to Trump. Modi, who has had a strong working relationship with Trump in the past, posted on social media, "Had a great conversation with my friend, President Donald Trump, congratulating him on his spectacular victory. Looking forward to working closely together once again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and several other sectors."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also extended his congratulations, voicing hopes that the new administration would help Ukraine find a "just peace" amid the ongoing war with Russia.
In contrast to the outgoing Biden administration’s approach, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance have been vocal about scaling back U.S. assistance to Ukraine. Trump's team has suggested that Ukraine may need to make significant concessions to bring an end to the conflict with Russia, signaling a stark departure from Biden’s strong support for Ukraine’s resistance.
Harris, who entered the presidential race in July after President Biden dropped out, had centered her campaign on Trump's controversial rhetoric, which often targeted racial minorities and women. Despite her centrist messaging, Harris struggled to gain traction, especially among Latino and Black voters. Trump won a greater share of the Latino vote, particularly among Latino men, as exit polls indicated a significant shift toward his campaign, in part due to concerns over the post-COVID economy and dissatisfaction with the Biden administration.
Trump’s win marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first U.S. president in more than a century to win a non-consecutive second term. He is also the only individual in U.S. history to be elected president while facing criminal charges, including an upcoming sentencing for fraud charges in New York on November 26.
As for his environmental policies, Trump is likely to continue his skepticism toward climate change and could roll back U.S. commitments to global climate accords. One of his most prominent supporters during the campaign was Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, who has long advocated for renewable energy, though his business interests are often in conflict with the administration's stance on climate change.
As the nation prepares for the inauguration in January, the results of this election signal a deeply divided America, with challenges ahead for the incoming administration in terms of both domestic unity and international diplomacy.
