Joy Reid Warns Trump's Deportation Plan May Target Green Card Holders

Joy Reid warned that Donald Trump's proposed deportation plan could target even legal immigrants and U.S. citizens, particularly people of color, especially those with darker skin tones. She criticized Trump's approach, describing it as a "meat-axe" method, where legal immigrants, including green card holders, might not be protected. Reid argued that the plan would disproportionately affect non-white individuals, regardless of their legal status.

During a discussion on Trump's election victory, Reid, along with Ali Velshi and David Cay Johnston, expressed concerns that the mass deportation strategy could lead to the wrongful removal of American citizens. Johnston predicted that many U.S. citizens could be deported due to the lack of precision in the enforcement of Trump's immigration plan.

Reid emphasized that Trump's plan would likely disregard the legal status of individuals, focusing instead on racial characteristics. She pointed out that immigrants of color, especially those who are "brown," could be at higher risk. "If you're brown, you may not stick around," Reid said, suggesting that green card status wouldn't provide sufficient protection from deportation under Trump's policies.

Trump's immigration rhetoric, including his past controversial statements about immigrants, has raised concerns about racial profiling and xenophobia. His first term saw an increase in denials for H-1B visas and efforts to limit the work authorization of H-4 visa holders, disproportionately affecting skilled foreign workers, particularly from Asia.

As Trump prepares to implement his immigration policies in his second term, experts are wary of the potential impact on both legal and undocumented immigrants. While his rhetoric targets border security and mass deportations, the broader implications for racial and legal fairness remain a subject of intense debate.
