Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the longest-living president in American history, has passed away at the age of 100. He died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, nearly two years after entering hospice care. Carter, known for his humility and compassion, left a significant legacy both as a president and as a global humanitarian. His death follows that of his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96.
In a statement, The Carter Center announced his passing, describing him as having died peacefully surrounded by family. President Joe Biden, who considered Carter a close friend, mourned the loss, highlighting Carter's remarkable achievements in peace-making, promoting civil and human rights, and eradicating disease. Biden declared January 9 as a National Day of Mourning and ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days.

Carter's presidency was marked by notable achievements such as brokering the Camp David Accords in 1978, which led to a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel. However, his term was also plagued by high inflation, oil crises, and the 444-day Iranian hostage crisis, which ultimately led to his defeat by Ronald Reagan in 1980.
After leaving office, Carter reinvented his legacy through The Carter Center, focusing on global health, democracy, and human rights. He was instrumental in eradicating the guinea worm parasite and worked tirelessly on behalf of displaced people and nations in conflict. His post-presidential work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Carter's life was marked by faith, a deep commitment to service, and a dedication to making the world a better place. His achievements as an ex-president, from diplomacy to humanitarian efforts, reshaped how former leaders could contribute to global well-being. Carter is remembered for his unwavering belief that individuals, regardless of their status, can make a difference in the world.
Though his presidency is often viewed as less successful due to political setbacks, his post-presidential work is now seen as defining his legacy. Carter's life spanned more than a century, starting in rural Georgia, where he was born, to becoming a statesman on the world stage, touching lives across the globe.
Carter's legacy lives on through his significant contributions to international peace, public health, and the advancement of human rights. His work continues to serve as a model for future generations of leaders.
