India is getting ready for a big leap in its railway system. The country is working on its first-ever high-speed bullet train project, which will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad. A major development was announced recently: Japan will provide its next-generation bullet trains, called E10 Shinkansen, for this project.
This is an important step in the strong friendship and strategic partnership between India and Japan. The introduction of these advanced trains will bring Indian railways closer to world-class standards. Let’s understand everything about this project in detail.

What Are E10 Shinkansen Trains?
Shinkansen trains are Japan’s famous high-speed bullet trains. These trains are known all over the world for being very fast, smooth, and safe. Right now, Japan is using E5 Shinkansen for its high-speed lines. But the E10 Shinkansen is a newer and more advanced version, being introduced for the first time — not just in India, but also in Japan itself.
That means India will become one of the first countries to use the latest-generation high-speed trains, side by side with Japan. The entire bullet train system in India is being built with help from Japan, using Japanese Shinkansen technology.
Mumbai to Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project: A Quick Overview
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project will run across 508 kilometers between Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. This train will reduce travel time from over 7 hours to just about 2 hours.
This project is being developed with Japanese technical support and financial assistance. The trains will run at a speed of 320 kilometers per hour, which is faster than any train currently running in India.
This new line will have 12 stations and will pass through two states — Maharashtra and Gujarat — along with a short section in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Latest Progress on the Bullet Train Project
The Indian Ministry of Railways recently shared some big updates on how the project is moving forward. Here's what's been done so far:
1. First Section of Undersea Tunnel Completed
One of the most exciting parts of this project is the undersea tunnel between Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Thane. This tunnel will go under the Thane Creek.
On Monday, a big milestone was achieved — the first section of the 21-kilometer-long undersea tunnel was completed. This part connects Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra.
This tunnel is a first-of-its-kind structure in India. It will allow the bullet train to travel smoothly under water without affecting the environment above.
2. Viaduct Construction Completed Over 310 Kilometers
A viaduct is a special kind of bridge that carries a railway line high above the ground. These are important for bullet trains because they need to run on straight and elevated tracks for safety and speed.
According to the Railway Ministry, over 310 kilometers of viaducts have already been built. That means more than 60% of the full line’s raised track is now ready.
3. River Bridge Work Making Fast Progress
The project also involves building several bridges over rivers. These bridges are needed to connect different parts of the railway across rivers and valleys.
Out of 20 river bridges, work on 15 is already completed. The remaining 4 bridges are in advanced stages and should be done soon. This is important because many parts of the bullet train’s route cross rivers in both Maharashtra and Gujarat.
4. Stations, Electrical Wires, and Control Systems Underway
Apart from tunnels and bridges, the Indian Railways is also working hard to complete:
Stations for passengers
Overhead electrical lines to power the train
Signal and control systems to manage operations safely
These parts are also moving ahead at a rapid pace, and systems for running the trains are already being procured.
BKC Station: An Engineering Marvel
The bullet train will begin its journey from a new station at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This station is being built 32.5 meters below the ground, and it will be one of the deepest train stations in India.
Even more impressively, this underground station will support a 95-meter tall building above it. This makes it a unique engineering marvel, as the design must hold a tall structure on top while also housing an advanced train station underneath.
India and Japan: A Growing Railway Partnership
The bullet train project shows how strong the friendship is between India and Japan. The two countries have been working together on many infrastructure and technology projects. This includes railways, roads, and even digital systems.
The introduction of E10 Shinkansen trains in both countries at the same time is a clear sign of how close this partnership is. Japan is helping India not just with train coaches, but also with:
Funding (through soft loans)
Construction technology
Training of Indian engineers and workers
This kind of help is making it easier for India to build something that has never been done before in the country.
What Will Happen After This Project?
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train line is just the first of many high-speed train corridors planned in India. Once this line is completed and running successfully, the Railway Ministry plans to start similar projects in other parts of the country.
Some of the future high-speed rail corridors being considered include:
Delhi to Varanasi
Delhi to Ahmedabad
Mumbai to Nagpur
Chennai to Mysuru
These projects are still under study or planning, but the success of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project will play a big role in speeding them up.
When Will the Bullet Train Be Ready?
The government is working hard to complete the project as soon as possible. The official deadline is currently set for 2026. However, since different parts of the project are progressing at different speeds, some sections might become operational earlier.
Trial runs of the bullet train are expected to start soon after the major construction works are completed, possibly by late 2025.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is not just a train project — it’s a symbol of progress, international friendship, and modern transportation in India. The addition of the E10 Shinkansen, which is Japan’s next-generation bullet train, makes this even more exciting.
With over 300 kilometers of viaducts completed, tunnel work progressing well, and stations being built with cutting-edge design, India is moving closer to running its first bullet train.
If successful, this will change the way Indians travel — making it faster, safer, and much more efficient. It will also create jobs, boost the economy, and inspire more high-speed travel in the future.
