James Anderson Makes History: 700th Test Wicket in 147 Years

On Saturday, England's pace stalwart, James Anderson, etched his name in cricket history by becoming the first fast bowler to achieve the remarkable feat of 700 Test wickets. This historic milestone was reached during Day 3 of the ongoing 5th Test against India in Dharamsala. Anderson secured the accomplishment by dismissing Kuldeep Yadav in the morning session, joining the exclusive club of bowlers with 700 or more Test wickets.

Only two legends precede Anderson in this elite category—Muttiah Muralitharan with 800 wickets and Shane Warne with 708. The 41-year-old, who made his Test debut for England in 2002, has now compiled 700 wickets across 187 Test matches. His impressive bowling record includes an average of 26.52, a strike rate of 56.9, 32 five-wicket hauls, and three ten-wicket hauls. Anderson's best bowling figures in an inning stand at 7/42.

Notably, this achievement makes Anderson the first fast bowler in the 147-year history of Test cricket to reach the 700-wicket mark. His contribution to England's bowling attack has been exemplary, and he holds the record for being England's highest wicket-taker in Tests.

During India's first innings in the ongoing Test, Anderson showcased his skill with figures of 2/60 in 16 overs, accounting for the dismissals of Shubman Gill and Kuldeep Yadav. In the broader context of international cricket, he stands behind only Muralitharan and Warne.

Despite the age factor, Anderson has been a force to reckon with, especially during England's tour of India. In the four Tests he played, he secured ten wickets at an average of 33.5, with his best bowling figures being 3/47.

As the wickets continued to fall on Day 3, India eventually got bowled out for 477 in their first innings, taking a substantial lead of 259 runs over England.
